How to Cure Monkey Mind

A while back, I was talking to a friend about writer’s block. Well, not so much writer’s block but the feeling of being pulled in too many directions at once, making it hard to focus sometimes.
As it turns out there is a term for this and it’s called monkey mind. The definition according to Wikipedia is this:
Monkey mind or mind monkey, from Chinese xinyuan and Sino-Japanese shin’en 心猿 [lit. “heart-/mind–monkey“], is a Buddhist term meaning “unsettled; restless; capricious; whimsical; fanciful; inconstant; confused; indecisive; uncontrollable.”

It seems to me that there might be lots of folks feeling this way lately.
Especially, with the global pandemic, riots, and all the craziness going on (like Trump declaring Covid-19 the China virus). It still cracks me up every time I think about it. I was watching him live on National Television when he said it.
Anyway, laughter is the best medicine. Even for monkey mind.
So now that you know what monkey mind is, how do you cure it?
Firstly, I would like to say that I am cursed with the entrepreneur gene. If you’re anything like me, then you too come up with new ideas every day and sometimes all day long.
I literally pull over in my car sometimes just to jot down ideas before I forget! This, of course, can distract you from your mission, cause you to lose focus, and sometimes even stop you dead in your tracks.
Sometimes even leaving you feeling stuck.
Sometimes I feel like an octopus using up all my arms (or legs) while trying to spin 12 plates. While I only have 8!
That to me is the best description of “monkey mind” and what it actually feels like.
So what do you do when you begin to feel this way? Well, there are lots of things you can do, one is to take a deep breathe and shift your focus. Think about what you should do first. Decide what is the most important thing you need to do right now, to propel yourself forward so you don’t feel stuck or overwhelmed.
To propel you and your business forward.
Or what I like to say, “Move the needle.”

Whether it’s to scale your business, start a business, stay afloat, or simply to feel happier. Then below are some solid things you can do to relieve the monkey mind, alleviate stress, and get more focused and productive.
*Go for a walk or get some fresh air even if it’s just opening a window and taking some deep breaths.
*Exercise and get your heart pumping. Do anything to get yourself moving. Do an exercise video, jump on the treadmill or turn on some music and dance around.
*Mediate. Admittedly, I’m not the biggest fan of meditation but others swear by it and I do test it on occasion. Below is the link to my favorite morning meditation. WARNING: It also has a combination of humor and profanity. So if this erks you in any way then skip it.

*Pick 3 things you need to do today and then commit to just 10 minutes (or more, but at least) of working on each thing.
*Eat something healthy – sometimes you lose focus because you are hungry (or hangry). First, drink a glass of water (you could also just be thirsty) and then have a healthy snack or a meal.

*Use the Pomodoro technique to accomplish more in less time. It’s a method where you focus on only ONE task for 25 minutes and then take a 5-minute break. This way you stay focused and get stuff done. Then in that 5 minutes, you check email, get a snack, or whatever. But during that 25 minutes (you can set a timer) you don’t do anything but focus on one task.
*And the most important thing to remember is that anything you might be struggling with or feeling right now is that this too shall pass. Everything is temporary including life itself and that the sun is always still shining brightly behind the clouds.
